For they said [1]within themselves, reasoning not aright, [2]Short and sorrowful is our life; [3]And there is no healing when a man cometh to his end, And [4]none was ever known that [5]gave release from Hades.
Because by mere chance were we born, And [6]hereafter we shall be as though we had never been: [7]Because the breath in our nostrils is smoke, And [8]while our heart beateth reason is a spark,
Which being extinguished, [9]the body shall be turned into ashes, And the spirit shall be dispersed as thin air;
[10]And our name shall be forgotten in time, And no man shall remember our works; And our life shall pass away [11]as the traces of a cloud, And [12]shall be scattered as is a mist, When it is chased by the beams of the sun, And [13]overcome by the heat thereof.
For our allotted time is [14]the passing of a shadow, And [15]our end retreateth not; Because it is fast sealed, and none [16]turneth it back.
[17]Come therefore and let us enjoy the good things [18]that now are; And let us use the creation [19]with all our soul [20] [21]as youth's possession.
[22]Let us fill ourselves with costly wine and perfumes; And let no flower of [23]spring pass us by:
[24]Let us crown ourselves with rosebuds, before they be withered:
Let none of us go without his share in our proud revelry: Everywhere let us leave tokens of our mirth: [25]Because this is our portion, and our lot is this.
[26]Let us oppress the righteous poor; Let us not spare the widow, Nor reverence the hairs of the old man gray for length of years.
But let our strength be to us a law of righteousness; For that which is weak is [27]found to be of no service.
But [28]let us lie in wait for the righteous man, Because he is of disservice to us, And is contrary to our works, And upbraideth us with sins against [29]the law, And layeth to our charge sins against our discipline.
[30]He professeth to have knowledge of God, And nameth himself [31]servant of the Lord.
[32]He became to us a reproof of our thoughts.
[33]He is grievous unto us even to behold, Because his life is unlike other men's, And his paths are of strange fashion.
We were accounted of him [34]as base metal, And he abstaineth from our ways as from uncleannesses. [35]The latter end of the righteous he calleth happy; And he vaunteth [36]that God is his father.
[37]Let us see if his words be true, And let us try what shall befall in the ending of his life.
[38]For if the righteous man is God's son, he will uphold him, And he will deliver him out of the hand of his adversaries.
[39]With outrage and torture let us put him to the test, That we may learn his gentleness, And may prove his patience under wrong.
[40]Let us condemn him to a shameful death; [41]For [42]he shall be visited according to his words.
Thus reasoned they, and they were led astray; For [43]their [44]wickedness blinded them,
And they knew not [45]the mysteries of God, Neither hoped they for wages of holiness, Nor did they judge that there is a prize for blameless souls.
[46]Because God created man for [47]incorruption, And made him [48]an image of his own [49]proper being;
[50]But by the envy of the devil death entered into the world, And [51]they that are of his portion make trial thereof.
