Jesus toma como exemplo a situação mais drástica da Lei: a morte (Êx 20.13; Dt 5.17) para demonstrar o que significa compreender e obedecer ao espírito da Lei e não apenas à letra. Ou seja, uma vida no sentido mais amplo e saudável dos mandamentos de Deus, em vez da interpretação meramente externa e restrita feita pela tradição rabínica.
