But when he was ready to die with stripes, he groaned, and said, It is manifest unto the Lord, that hath the holy knowledge, that whereas I might have been delivered from death, I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten: but in soul am well content to suffer these things, because I fear him.

And when he was at the point to die [52] with the [53] stripes, he groaned aloud and said, To the Lord, that hath the holy knowledge, it is manifest that, [54] whereas I might have been delivered from death, I endure sore pains in my body [55] by being scourged; but in soul I gladly suffer these things for my fear of him.

E quando ele estava prestes a morrer sob os golpes, exclamou entre suspiros: O Senhor que possui a ciência santíssima o vê: podendo eu livrar-me da morte, sofro em meu corpo os tormentos cruéis dos açoites, mas os suporto com alma alegre porque é a ele que temo.

Ele, porém, estando já a ponto de morrer sob os golpes disse gemendo: "Ao Senhor que tem a santa ciência, é manifesto que eu podendo livrar-me da morte, estou suportando cruéis dores no meu corpo ao ser flagelado, mas que em minha alma sofro-as com alegria por causa do seu temor."

But when he should be slain with wounds, he sorrowed inwardly, and said, Lord, that hast holy cunning (or knowing, or knowledge), openly thou knowest, that when I might be delivered from death, I (now) suffer hard sorrows of (or in) (my) body; forsooth by soul willfully (or willingly) I suffer these things, for thy dread.

Estando prestes a morrer por espancamento, soltou um gemido e disse: «Ao Senhor, cuja sabedoria é santa, para quem é tudo manifesto. Ele sabe que eu, podendo ter escapado da morte, suporto estas terríveis dores dos açoites; mas, na minha alma, sofro com alegria, porque o temo.»
