Whe she heard these things, she was very sorrowful, so that she thought to have strangled herself; and she said, I am the only daughter of my father, and if I do this, it shall be a reproach unto him, and I shall bring his old age with sorrow unto the grave.

Queres porventura matar-me, como mataste todos os sete? Ouvindo isso, Sara subiu ao seu quarto e aí ficou três dias completos, sem comer nem beber.

Naquele dia, a alma de Sara se encheu de tristeza: ela se pôs a chorar e subiu ao quarto de seu pai com a intenção de se enforcar. Mas, refletindo, pensou: "Talvez isto sirva para que injuriem meu pai e lhe digam: "Tinhas uma filha única, amada, e ela se enforcou porque se sentia infeliz." Não posso consentir que meu pai, em sua velhice, desça acabrunhado à mansão dos mortos.[r] É melhor que, em vez de enforcar-me, suplique ao Senhor que me envie a morte, para não ter de ouvir injúrias durante minha vida."

Naquele dia, Sara ficou muito triste e pôs-se a chorar. Subiu então ao quarto do seu pai com a intenção de se enforcar, mas refletiu e disse para consigo: «Não; não posso fazer uma coisa destas! Pois todos insultariam o meu pai e diriam: “Tinhas somente uma filha querida, e ela teve tantos desgostos que se enforcou.” A tristeza faria o meu velho pai descer para o mundo dos mortos e eu seria a culpada. Não; não me vou matar. Será melhor eu pedir a Deus que me deixe morrer e assim não terei de ouvir mais insultos.»
