For had they not been formerly wrapped in many sins, this man, as soon as he had come, had forthwith been scourged, and put back from his presumption, as Heliodorus was, whom Seleucus the king sent to view the treasury.

But had it not so been that they were already holden by many sins, this man, even [32] as Heliodorus who was sent by [33] Seleucus the king to view [34] the treasury, would, so soon as he pressed forward, have been scourged and turned back from his daring deed.

porque, se os judeus não fossem por demais culpáveis, a exemplo de Heliodoro, enviado pelo rei Seleuco para inspecionar o tesouro, ele teria sido flagelado logo que chegou, e dissuadido de sua audácia.

Portanto, se não tivesse acontecido estarem eles envolvidos em tantos pecados, também este homem, à maneira de Heliodoro, que fora enviado pelo rei Seleuco para a inspeção da câmara do tesouro, ao dar o primeiro passo, teria sido imediatamente afastado da sua temeridade a golpes de açoites.
