For as it is hurtful to drink wine or water alone; and as wine mingled with water is pleasant, and delighteth the taste: even so speech finely framed delighteth the ears of them that read the story. And here shall be an end.

[59] For as it is [60] distasteful to drink wine alone and in like manner again to drink water alone, [61] while the mingling of wine with water at once [62] giveth full pleasantness to the flavour; so also the fashioning of the language delighteth the ears of them that read the story. Assim como é nocivo beber somente o vinho ou somente a água, mas agradável e verdadeiramente proveitoso beber a água e o vinho misturados, assim também a disposição agradável do relato é o que causa prazer aos ouvidos do leitor. Aqui, pois, termino.

De fato, como é nocivo beber somente vinho, ou somente água, ao passo que o vinho misturado à água é agradável e causa um prazer delicioso, assim o (trabalho) da preparação do relato encanta os ouvidos daqueles que entram em contacto com a composição. Aqui, porém, será o fim.

Soothly as for to drink (for)evermore wine, either [or] (for)evermore water, it is contrary, but for to use changeable, either [or] now one, now another, is delightable; so to men reading, if the word be (for)evermore sought to (or for) each part, it shall not be covenable, (or suitable), or pleasing; therefore here it shall be ended. Here endeth the second book of Maccabees, which is (the) end of the Old Testament; see now the New Testament. [Here endeth the story of Maccabees, the which is the last book of the Old Testament. And now beginneth the New Testament; first is the prologue of Matthew, apostle and evangelist.]
