Now one Alcimus, who had been high priest, and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles, seeing that by no means he could save himself, nor have any more access to the holy altar,

But one [4] Alcimus, who had formerly been high priest, and had wilfully polluted himself in the times [5] when there was no mingling with the Gentiles, considering that there was no deliverance for him in any way, nor any more access unto the holy altar,

Ora, certo Alcimo, outrora sumo sacerdote, mas voluntariamente comprometido por ocasião da introdução dos costumes pagãos, vendo que de nenhum lado lhe restava esperança de salvação, nem possibilidade de achegar-se ainda ao altar,

Ora, certo Alcimo, que anteriormente fora sumo sacerdote mas que voluntariamente se havia contaminado[l] no tempo da revolta, compreendeu que para ele não havia mais salvação de espécie alguma, nem qualquer possibilidade de acesso ao santo altar.
