Whom men could not honour in presence, because they dwelt far off, they took the counterfeit of his visage from far, and made an express image of a king whom they honoured, to the end that by this their forwardness they might flatter him that was absent, as if he were present.

And when men could not honour them in presence because they dwelt far off, Imagining the likeness from afar, They made a visible image of the king whom they honoured, That by their zeal they might flatter the absent as if present.

Foi também em conseqüência das ordens dos príncipes que se adoraram imagens esculpidas, porque aqueles que não podiam honrar pessoalmente, porque moravam longe deles, fizeram representar o que se achava distante, e expuseram publicamente a imagem do rei venerado, a fim de lisonjeá-lo de longe com seu zelo, como se estivesse presente.

como os homens, vivendo longe, não podiam honrá-los em pessoa, representaram sua longínqua figura, fazendo uma imagem visível do rei que honravam, para assim, mediante esse zelo, adular o ausente como presente.

The figure of them was brought from (a)far, which the men might not honour in open, for they were far (off); and they made an open image of the king, whom they would honour; that by their busyness they should worship him as present, that was absent. [These whom in open men might not worship, for that afar they were, from afar the figure of them is brought; the evident image of the king, whom worship they would, they made; that him that was afar, as present they should praise with busyness.]

Por ordem dos reis, as imagens foram adoradas. Os que moravam longe de um rei, e não lhe podiam prestar homenagem pessoalmente, imaginaram como ele seria e fizeram uma imagem dele que pudessem homenagear. E assim, por dedicação, lisonjeavam aquele que estava ausente, como se estivesse presente.
