For, look, for what things they grudged, when they were punished, that is, for them whom they thought to be gods; now being punished in them, when they saw it, they acknowledged him to be the true God, whom before they denied to know: and therefore came extreme damnation upon them.

For through the sufferings whereat they were indignant, [44] Being punished in these creatures which they supposed to be gods, [45] They saw, and recognised as the true God him whom [46] before they [47] refused to know: [48] Wherefore also the last end of condemnation came upon them.

Excitados, então, pelos sofrimentos causados por esses animais que tinham julgado deuses, e que os atormentavam, viram o que no começo tinham recusado ver, e reconheceram o verdadeiro Deus. Por isso é que caiu sobre eles a condenação final.[*]

Ao serem castigados por aqueles mesmos que tomaram por deuses - que os fizeram sofrer e irritar-se -, viram claro e reconheceram como Deus verdadeiro aquele que outrora recusaram conhecer. Por isso, sobre eles se abateu a última condenação.[h]

For they bare heavily in these things, which they suffered, in which things they suffering had indignation; they seeing him, whom they denied sometime them to know, knew him (as the) very (or the true) God, by these things which they guessed (to be) gods among them, when those were destroyed; for which thing and the end of their condemnation shall come on them. [In these things forsooth that they suffered, heavily they bare, in the which suffering they disdained; by those things that they guessed gods, in them when they were destroyed, seeing him, whom sometime they denied them to have known, very God they knew; for the which and the end of the condemning of them shall come on them.]

Castigados pelos mesmos animais que tinham estabelecido como deuses e agora os faziam sofrer, ficaram zangados e reconheceram como o verdadeiro Deus aquele que antes não quiseram aceitar. Por isso, foram condenados a sofrer um castigo muito pior [35] .
