Therefore beware of murmuring, which is unprofitable; and refrain your tongue from backbiting: for there is no word so secret, that shall go for nought: and the mouth that belieth slayeth the soul.

[19] Beware then of unprofitable murmuring,And [20] refrain your tongue from backbiting; Because no secret utterance [21] shall go on its way void, And [22] a mouth that belieth destroyeth a soul.

Acautelai-vos, pois, de queixar-vos inutilmente, evitai que vossa língua se entregue à crítica, porque até mesmo uma palavra secreta não ficará sem castigo, e a boca que acusa com injustiça arrasta a alma à morte.

Guardai-vos, pois, do murmúrio inútil, poupai à vossa língua a maledicência;[n] não há frase furtiva que caia no vazio, a boca mentirosa mata a alma.
