Now when the Jews heard of Nicanor's coming, and that the heathen were up against them, they cast earth upon their heads, and made supplication to him that had established his people for ever, and who always helpeth his portion with manifestation of his presence.

But when the Jews heard of Nicanor's inroad and the assault of the heathen, [22] they sprinkled earth upon their heads and made solemn supplication to him [23] who had established his own people for evermore, and who alway, making manifest his presence, upholdeth them that are [24] his own portion.

Os judeus, ao ouvirem falar da expedição de Nicanor e do ataque dos gentios, cobriram a cabeça com pó e imploraram àquele que estabelecera seu povo para sempre e que continuamente, de modo visível, defendia sua parte escolhida.

Tendo ouvido a notícia da expedição de Nicanor e da agressão dos gentios, os judeus cobriram de terra as cabeças e puseram-se a suplicar Àquele que constituíra o seu povo para a eternidade e que sempre, com a manifestação da sua presença, vem em socorro da sua própria herança.
